Refuse to occupy - international Day of action 1st of December 2016

Tamar Alon, Atalya Ben Abba and Tamar Ze'evi are facing imprisonment for refusing to serve the Israeli occupation. Support them by joining us on December 1st for an international day of action.

Vigils will take place outside arms manufacturing facilities and other locations calling on governments to stop arming the Israeli occupation rather than profiting from it.

Amir Eid the new Egyptian CO which the Egyptian authority must determine his rights

The movement “No to compulsory military service” stresses its complete support to the conscientious objector Amir Eid and his right to full exemption from military service, which is guaranteed by the United Nations convention which was ratified by Egypt.

GREECE: Recommendations at the UN Human Rights Council and European Court judgement highlight the urgent need for legislative reform on conscientious objection

“In less than a year three different international human rights instruments have pointed out serious violations of human rights of conscientious objectors in Greece,” EBCO President Friedhelm Schneider underlined today. “This highlights Greece’s urgent need for legislative reform on conscientious objection, in order to comply with international human rights law and standards.” For this reason EBCO has decided to hold its next meeting in Athens, Greece (19 – 21 November).

Stop the Military Education: A statement of support for the CO Kamal El-ghety

No to Compulsory Military Service Movement supports the Conscientious Objector Kamal El-ghety in his request to be excepted from the compulsory Military Education subject. The universities organization law requires every Egyptian male student to attend a subject on Military Education in order to get his graduation certificate.

Turkey guilty of inhuman treatment of ‘Muslim objector’

The European Court of Human Rights has found Turkey guilty of inhuman treatment of a “Muslim objector” who declined to serve in Turkey’s military due to the country’s secular identity, while ruling that Turkey did not violate the complainant’s freedom of conscience because his objection was based on political grounds.

Ebco meeting May 2016 in London

EBCO met in London half May 2016 to remember the first law in history (U.K. , 1916) which provided a legal right to conscientious objection to military service. Next EBCO meeting will be organized in Athens in November 2016 with presentation of the annual EBCO report (survey on the current CO situation in Europe); Mihalis Marangakis, one of the historical Greek CO's, will present also his autobiographical book.

EBCO appeal: Free Ruslan Kotsaba!

peaceRuslan Kotsaba, a journalist and conscientious objector from Ukraine, was  sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment by the city court of Ivano-Frankivsk (Western Ukraine) on 12 May 2016. The court found him guilty of „obstructing the legitimate activities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces“.

14th May: Meet conscientious objectors from across Europe

On Saturday 14th May, the European Bureau for Conscientious Objection are holding their annual meeting in London for the first time; join representatives of peace movements afterwards for an informal meeting at 7.30pm. It will be a chance to hear how we can support anti-conscription and conscientious objector movements today, as well as to discover how recognition of the rights of conscientious objectors in Britain in 1916 impacted campaigns in other countries.
